"You know you're a Chaote when..." -
From E-cauldron:
You Know You're a Chaote When...
1) You don't think it's a proper symbol unless you only just made it up a few seconds ago while doodling.
2) Someone asks you if you believe life has a purpose, or whether it is meaningless, and you say "yes."
3) You always carry around lots of post-it notes and a pen in case you need to cast a sigil.
4) People ask you how magic works, and you either: A) don't know and don't care or B) explain in torturous detail, later causing them to seek therapy.
5) Someone asks you if you believe in the Christian God, and you say: A) "Only if there's something in it for me", B) "What day of the week is it?", C) "Sorry, I rolled a 6 on the dice earlier, I'm a Wiccan today", D) "Okay, haven't got any other plans for today"
6) Missionaries find it easy to convert you to their religion, the only trouble is making sure you don't convert to another religion as soon as you're bored.
7) Other magick workers compare rituals with you. You think they're too serious and stuffy, and they refuse to live in the same neighbourhood as you. You don't see anything wrong with making up your own god, until it starts telling you what to do.
8) While in trance, a being glowing with pure white light tells you the secrets to true happiness. You smile and ignore it/laugh at it.
9) People point out your beliefs are contradictory. You blush.
10) Your bookcase contains various holy texts that claim all the other texts are wrong.
11) You don't learn Latin in order to understand tomes of magic, you learn Quantum Physics.
12) You still don't understand the tomes after learning Quantum Physics, but at least you know lots of big words now.
13) Your rituals involve the first objects you can spot lying around.
14) You aspire to schizophrenia. Your friends think you've already reached that state.
15) Your banishment rituals are usually more fun than the rituals themselves. You keep a copy of a "certain revisionist" book for whenever you need to banish with laughter.
16) Even eclectic witches think you need to be more discerning.
17) You buy one of those glittery spell books to see if you can make the spells work. You read it and decide you would much rather write insulting letters to the author that will also give her the nasty cold you've been trying to get rid of for weeks.
18) When Wiccans tell you the rede, you ask them to define "harm."
19) If someone you agree with turns out to be obnoxious, you immediately change your beliefs to the opposite of what they were.
And finally...
20) Shopping for presents becomes so much easier, as you decide to buy random things, mix them up randomly, and leave them lying around for the first person who finds them.

Whose? Most Chaotes I know would be rolling with laughter, if not nodding in agreement. Most likely both, actually.

Also see things you don't want to hear a chaos magickian say.
There's another one somewhere that describes how you know if a rite has worked, things like scanning the headlines for major explosions, and so forth. Adorable.
However, #9 is flatly wrong. No chaote would blush upon being told their views are contradictory.
The rest are variations on funny and/or true. (Nothing is true; everything is permitted. So it goes. Insert other platitudes here.) Especially of NuKaosKids.

No doubt, most of the chaotes I've engaged have had quirky senses of humour. But there's also a strong streak of rebelliousness, and even the hint of an imposition of how they might could act or respond can ruffle a few feathers.
However, with that said, these days most of the new converts to an occult worldview I meet come by way of chaos magick... Kids today don't seem to be much interested in the G:D or A.'.A.'., for example...
Maybe the rumblings of a poll question somewhere in here...

Absolutely. Ever notice how it's always the bad guys who have the most fun?

Now that is interesting. Most of the new occultniks I meet tend to be neo-pagans, or neo-pagans branching out into the ceremonial world.
How do they find chaos magick? I thought it was still fringe of the fringe, heh.
Re: "You know you're a Chaote when..." -
Far from it. Certain forms of chaos magic - specifically, those which discard ceremony and ritual altogether - tend to be closest to what most people think of as magic, much thanks to DnD and the media as a whole. So when people go looking specifically to do magic, they tend to discard anything "ceremonial" as being too fettered, bogged down so as to slow the learner, as well as the caster. Today's society is all about immediacy anyway, so the media image of magic aside, many are drawn to what seems to give the most immediate results. Not many of the more established forms of magic offer speed as well as power - if only because they've all "learned" that too much too quickly can corrupt.

In my neck-of-the-woods there seems to be almost equal measures of practitioners for chaos magick and Hicks' "Law of Attraction". But the Pacific North West has no shortage of yuppies, so I'm not convinced my sampling is representative.

some of that was pretty funny, specially 7 8 11 12 and 15 i think i saw it before on fenwick rysen's chaosmatrix.org...
anyway, haters aside, the techniques explored and documented by chaos pioneers in all fields, not just magic, have revolutionized basically everything - labeling that revolution a "pop-culture phenomena" is just absurd. now, i understand that too much power too quickly can be very corruptive and misleading, but a bunch of knowledge followed by just a bit of real power is a road that just as easily leads to paranoia, delusion, confusion, and dissatisfaction (the tower is tied to the heirophant, remember...yeah, you remember). the first and most important step is to learn methods of controlling the mind and accepting it for what it is, after that whatever the hell you wanna believe - if it works, then it works, and that's it.
and there's nothing DnD about my practice (okay, that's a lie, i did use a 20 sided dice as a divination tool for a while)

@ezavan: Thank you for refuting me instead of just saying I was wrong. That's so very refreshing! The bit of humor added in didn't hurt either.
My personal view on it all was phrased perfectly when you said:

Chaote? Chaos magic? Oh dear, you have opened up an entirely new branch of knowledge for me. I simply hadn't heard of the word before. And now the more that I read on it, the more I feel that I may be, if not a chaote, at least, chaotic.. LOL!! Thanks for this interesting post.
