Why Meditate on God Names?
This post is aimed at Golden Dawn ritual practices, but has relevance to other traditions as well. Knowledge of ritual techniques like the Vibratory Formulae would be useful and familiarity with the Qabalistic worlds model.
Atziluth world of Deity.
Briah world of Creation.
Yetzirah world of Formation.
Assiah world of Action.
Most magic takes place in the world of Yetzirah, to truly change Yetzirah you need work from the world above Briah. Meditations on the symbols and God Names used within a ritual should (with work) lead to a Bractic connection.
Images don't exist in Briah. Briah is like the creative leap of having an abstract idea transformed into knowledge. You just know something to be so, without knowing why of where the knowledge came from. This then lead to a state of no "I" awareness.
We see this formulae of moving down the Qabalistic worlds to ground in Assiah used in many Golden Dawn techniques. Example Golden Dawn Vibratory Formulae:
Briah - Connection to God Name
Yetzirah - Visualise God Name
Assiah - Vibrate God Name
One Technique to Meditate
Buy a good book on the subject (any recommendations?) - but be aware most people think "meditation" is just relaxation and wool-gathering. Its not.
1. Preparations: LBRP + Relaxation (4 fold breath)
2. Concentrate on a single symbol, idea, sound - aim is to use your will for a single one pointed purpose.
3. Deep intuitive understanding of the meditation object will arise. Ignore it and continue concentrating on the meditation object. Note if the realisation is important you won't forget it.
4. Mind will ultimately transcend itself to a ego-less awareness.
Without an ability to meditate, you will not unfold very far on your spiritual path and anybody who says you don't need to meditate is deluded.

Re: Why Meditate on God Names?
Or just misinformed. There is a very subtle difference between the two.
