Provocative Quotations -
For years now I've been gathering quotations that somehow spoke to me... I thought I'd start a thread where I could share a few and hopefully others would contribute too, so here goes!
"It is not in knowing truth that the purpose of life is accomplished; the purpose of life is accomplished in being truth." - Hazrat Inayat Khan
"Books are not made to be believed, but to be subjected to inquiry." - Umberto Eco

Quotes
“People exaggerate the value of things they haven't got: everybody worships truth and unselfishness because they have no experience with them”
-George Bernard Shaw
Hegel, said Schopenhauer, was a commonplace, inane, loathsome, repulsive and ignorant charlatan, who with unparalleled effrontery compiled a system of crazy nonsense that was trumpeted abroad as immortal wisdom by his mercenary followers... -Bryan Magee

Re: Provocative Quotations -
One extreme is the idea of an objective world, pursuing its regular course in space and time, independently of any kind of observing subject; this has been the guiding image from modern science. At the other extreme is the idea of a subject, mystically experiencing the unity of the world and no longer confronted by an object or by an objective world; this has been the guiding image of Asian mysticism. Our thinking moves somewhere in the middle, between these two limiting conceptions; we should maintain the tension resulting from these opposites." - Werner Heisenberg

Re: Provocative Quotations -
"Knowing that I was at the Prieuré he [Crowley] asked me if I would get him an invitation there. But I did not wish to be responsible for introducing such a man. However, to my surprise, he appeared there a few days later and was given tea in the salon. The children were there and he said to one of the boys something about his son whom he was teaching to be a devil. Gurdjieff got up and spoke to the boy, who thereupon took no further notice of Crowley. There was some talk between Crowley and Gurdjieff, who kept a sharp watch on him all the time. I got a strong impression of two magicians, the white and the black - the one strong, powerful, full of light; the other also powerful but heavy, dull, and ignorant. Though 'black' is too strong a word for Crowley; he never understood the meaning of real black magic, yet hundreds of people came under his 'spell.' He was clever. But, as Gurdjieff says: He is stupid who is clever.'" - C.S. Nott, Teachings of Gurdjieff

Re: Provocative Quotations -
Ok, I know this is supposed to be for quotations, but now I've gotta ask: Did Crowley and/or Gurdjieff give an account of this encounter anywhere that you know of?

Yes. If someone doesn't beat me to it, I'll drag up a competing version of this incident when my schedule permits.neutralrobotboy wrote:Did Crowley and/or Gurdjieff give an account of this encounter anywhere that you know of?

Re: Provocative Quotations -
I've come across a few so far... Here's the first:
"Mister, you go?" Gurdjieff inquired. Crowley assented. "You have been guest?" - a fact which the visitor could hardly deny. "Now you go, you are no longer guest?" Crowley - no doubt wondering whether his host had lost his grip on reality and was wandering in a semantic wilderness - humored his mood by indicating that he was on his way back to Paris. But Gurdjieff, having made the point that he was not violating the canons of hospitality, changed on the instant into the embodiment of righteous anger. "You filthy," he stormed, "you dirty inside! Never again you set foot in my house!" ... Whitefaced and shaking, the Great Beast crept back to Paris with his tail between his legs." - James Webb, The Harmonious Circle: The Lives and Work of G.I. Gurdjieff, P.D. Ouspensky, and Their Followers, p. 315.

Re: Provocative Quotations -
There's another account in Symonds' The Great Beast, but I no longer have a copy so I have to go by my notes:
On pp. 303-4 Symonds quotes Crowley's diary to the effect that Crowley visited the Prieuré but did not meet Gurdjieff. Instead he spent the time with a "Major Pindar" and is quoted as concluding, "Gurdjieff clearly a very advanced adept (sic)."
IMO, the likelihood of Crowley speaking highly of anyone seems low. Symonds was anything but a sympathetic biographer, and he probably would've loved to have included Gurdjieff's insults in his book - had he known about them.
For more on this controversy, I recommend checking out this thread at LAShTAL.

Re: Provocative Quotations -
Just important to know where these quotes come from. Legal issues aside, it's nice to look further into the various quotes and their authors. Quotes are often a good way to introduce someone to a new individual's work and perspective.
