Thinking negatively can boost your memory, study finds

SYDNEY (Reuters Life!) - Bad moods can actually be good for you, with an Australian study finding that being sad makes people less gullible, improves their ability to judge others and also boosts memory.

The study, authored by psychology professor Joseph Forgas at the University of New South Wales, showed that people in a negative mood were more critical of, and paid more attention to, their surroundings than happier people, who were more likely to believe anything they were told.

"Whereas positive mood seems to promote creativity, flexibility, cooperation, and reliance on mental shortcuts, negative moods trigger more attentive, careful thinking paying greater attention to the external world," Forgas wrote.

"Our research suggests that sadness ... promotes information processing strategies best suited to dealing with more demanding situations."

Funny, 'cause AFAIK, long-term depression has a negative impact on memory. Maybe it's similar to running, where a bit is healthy but too much and the cortisol prematurely ages your heart... There was another recent study I read about that suggested that depression is good for figuring out problems, especially social situations.

I think that there should be a healthy balance between both. You can't be 100 percent positive and 100 percent negative without getting into trouble. You need a dose of both.

To clarify, a "healthy balance" of something means a balance that is always shifting, but stays toward half-and-half rather than hovering near either outside edge. It is this flowing between more positive now, more negative later, and then more positive again, and so forth, that qualifies the balance as a healthy one. Stagnation is not healthy.
