Taking a page from theoccult.bz's playbook, we thought we'd solicit favicon submissions from our community. Although we don't have download credits, pretentious user classes, or any of that etc to "gift" the winner with, we do encourage communal-participation, and would love to find a favicon that's resonant with the community. So fire up those icon apps and dig up some potentials! Very Happy

Submission #1 (or so it seems as I write this):

(digimob) Favicon Submissions - Favicon

Very simple design. Was used for a day or two here until I managed to resurrect the original. Hoping something more ... creative will come along at some point so I'm not the only one contributing to the site's features. Smile

Wow... I hope we find some more participation shortly! Theoccult.bz had plenty of submissions for their contest, and it'd be a shame if people didn't pitch in here too. Or, at least, IMO. Wink

Is there a "deadline" for submissions? I'm going to have to give it some thought...

Just to keep things moving, I have reduced the DigiMob Logo to an icon as well. It looks really crappy better than it used to, but there's still really no reliable way to do this well without the original vector image. Icons are hard - favicons only give you 16x16 pixels to work with!

(digimob) Favicon Submissions - Digimob-logo

Maybe I can get a copy of the vector image from whoever has it - if they still do - and redo this properly?

Yes, that makes sense - how about 'entries must be received NLT Feb 28'?

I'm hesitant of setting the deadline too soon - lest we be limited to a whopping 2 choices. Likewise, I'm hesitant of setting the deadline too far into the future, as this might become a little humiliating.

But otherwise, we're definitely open to suggestions.

I've been mulling this over for several days now, and I've had two dominant impressions: 1) I think maybe a single glyph would be ideal. Something simple and elegant and complimentary to what we're trying to do here. 2) For a public project as large as Digimob, I'm amazed there isn't greater and more enthusiastic participation.

Anyway, maybe the first point is more relevant than the second, which may just be my prejudice. Embarassed

Maybe it would help if you viewed 'participation' as 'recognition'. This project isn't geared towards 'recognition'. It's an act of service for a global community of students, and rest-assured that it is appreciated.

AfnK, got any ideas on a script? It might be difficult to find one that was inclusive enough, yeah?

I was considering the use of a circuit diagram symbol, at least in the background, to go along with the Digital bit... Just have to figure out which one to use...

Thanks for the gentle reminder, Frater Digimob. Smile

Khephra: I see what you mean about the difficulty in picking a script. Everything I think up fits certain aspects and yet simultaneously excludes certain aspects... It seems like it might be practical to have something new - looking forward, instead of back. In that case, it might not be prudent to look for scripts, and I should reframe my reflections...

OK, I haven't gotten far on the electronics bit, but I did have another idea. There are a few variations on this running through my head that I haven't gotten a chance to animate yet, but animated .gifs CAN be used as the favicon. I've tested it! Well, they can in Firefox at any rate. Every other browser I've tested except IE uses the first frame as the icon. IE is just stupid and doesn't use anything at all.

Neat! I wonder how it would render at scale? Would it still be legible?

Indeed, it would. If you're using Firefox, go to the Release Index server and have a peek. Other browsers that aren't IE will show the mountain by itself with no animation. IE shows nothing.
