Order of Placement of the Cards Empty Order of Placement of the Cards

Post  Lucian Gerrit Fri Nov 27, 2009 1:27 am

So I'm giving a workshop on tarot mechanics tomorrow (nothing on interpretations, just how to lay 'em out) and I thought I had everything pretty much figured out. I wanted to work through several different methods so that participants would have options when they gave/practised readings.

I got to the "Opening of the Key" operation from I.R.'s "The Complete Golden Dawn" (pages 569 to 581, likely to change based on edition) and realized that I do not know in which direction to lay the cards out when face up.

example, order of four cards face up: Emperor (top card), 3 swords, 5 wands, 10 pentacles. Would the Emperor end on on the left or the right of the horseshoe?

I'm going with the idea of consistency, as long as you do it the same way every time it doesn't much matter. However, I want to check that there is not something in the system that I've missed which would have them spread out in a specific direction.

Thanks for your time,
Gerrit

Different authorities show the cards fanned in different directions.

Have you read Paul's book Tarot and the Magus? He's really keen on the Opening of the Key. Oh, and Paul's got a new book out in a couple of days. Just a little bit of gossip for all you tarot readers . . .

It might be best to pick one layout/spread and develop. If you start with several layouts/spreads, you'll probably have more confusion than understanding.

As well, different decks are more appropriate for different layouts/spreads. So that should probably be considered too. Wink

@amandachen: thanks for the response, and nope, I've not read 'Tarot and Magus', but it is now on my reading list. Smile

@ankh_f_n_khonsu: I'll definitely take those perspective to the group and see how they want to develop work in the tarot, but for now I want to show them the options and that the Celtic Cross, while useful, is not the only way to read the cards.

Workshop Report:
Did the workshop yesterday, had poor turnout but thats ok as I realized that it needs a good deal of work.

Going through the actual dealing out of all the different spreads properly takes a really long time, much longer then I though. I also realized exactly how much information I was throwing at people and that probably not much of it is sticking. If I had gone through with just one spread and (as you suggested ankh_f_n_khonsu) developed that, I think it would have gone better. I'll revise it and will probably be running another workshop sometime before the new year.

i don't know jack from jim about golden dawn tarot layouts, so this doesn't really have to do with your workshop, but for a different approach to spreads in the "fortune-telling" vein of tarot use, i learned a lot from:

Power Tarot: More Than 100 Spreads That Give Specific Answers to Your Most Important Question (Paperback)

their interpretations of the cards are kinda sketchy, and it's a book written by phone-service psychics. but there are seriously more than 100 spreads that give specific answers to your most important questions. it would be incredibly difficult to workshop this material with little hands-on experience, but for your own practice pick out three or four spreads, play with them and don't worry about getting it right, absorb the way the meaning of the cards interact, and see if it doesn't help expand your whole tarot game. in my experience it doesn't require more than four or so different spreads to address most questions, and in extreme cases the intuition is a good guide for spreads on the fly. tarot's a lot of fun, and can help you learn quite a bit about yourself, i wish you luck exploring. if you are under the impression that there is only one "right" way to interpret the interaction of the cards i encourage you strongly to deal the major arcana in ANY patterned dealing (especially patterns that are not at all premeditated), and think deeply of their placement, as if it were a message directly from the center of the universe. rinse, and repeat. this is frequently as rewarding as deep study of other people's discoveries.

Glad to hear your workshop was successful! It takes time to develop 'presentational competence' and gain an established foothold, so trial-and-error is nothing to scoff at. Smile

Are you taking any tarot courses? How about Robert Wang?

On thing that should be taken into consideration is the difference between a Spread and a Layout. A Spread can be defined as random cards placed on specific positions, the classic example of that would be a Celtic Cross, A Layout can be defined as specific cards placed on specific positions, the classic example of that would be The Fool's Journey.
