Enhancing The Release Index Empty Enhancing The Release Index

OK, so all of this [ the items discussed at Assisting with the (digimob) Project ] came to fruition not long ago with the Release Index (see the navigation bar at the top of the page), but there are still some features missing. Since everything in the database was put there automatically, by script, and straight from the .torrent files, at that, there is no categorization (aside from file types), and no author info. It wouldn't be hard to automate this information going into the database in the future, but some sort of mechanism still has to be devised to make it work. And then there are the 12,310 files already listed that would have to be updated with the relevant info. So still a lot of work ahead to get all of this working well, but I think it might be manageable.

So the next step would be to figure out how to indicate the categories and authors in future digests. There are a couple of ways I can think of, some more difficult and involved than others, but I think the easiest would be to set up the folders into categories, for example:
Code:
/Western Inner Traditions/Fraternal Societies/Golden Dawn/:file:

From there, for the author name, I see two possibilities, both as easy to work with as the other. The first option would be to begin the file name with the author's name, much as has been done with prior releases, in a format like "Crowley, Aleister - Book of the Law.pdf" or "Gozaknee, Tanranin Uhcheek, Frater - The Red Planet Arrives.pdf":
Code:
:last:, :first: :middles:, :titles: - :work:
This has the added benefit that the author is never severed from the file, but the drawback of having really long file names, which can be a problem on some file systems, such as DVD.

The second option is to continue the use of folders. Using the same basic format as above, with the difference that the author's name would be a folder name, so it would come out "/Western Inner Traditions/Fraternal Societies/Golden Dawn/Gozaknee, Tanranin Uhcheek, Frater/The Red Planet Arrives.pdf":
Code:
/:category:/:subcategories:/:last:, :first: :middles:, :titles:/:work:
This only shortens the file name by two characters from the method above, but that may be all that is needed in many cases. The author is no longer directly associated with the file, but since file names can be changed after downloading anyway, that is not a great drawback. And credit is still given.

It may be obvious that I'm leaning toward the second method, but regardless of that, there are other options as well, and some may be better than what I have devised. Whatever method we choose, we do have a few months before having to implement it, so there is some time, though the earlier the method can be devised, the more easily it will be implemented. And there's still the loads of work to be done on the existing entries.

I leave the discussion with you, the DigiMob community, and know that only good will come of our joint efforts.

Personally, I'm just happy having a searchable index. It maybe could be more All-Star, but I'm finding it very helpful just as it is! Very Happy

It does seem to work fairly well for the moment. The only reason I brought this up was because Khephra mentioned wanting said features back on the first post (or so). But perhaps the community will decide that the current incarnation is more than enough for their needs...

The SQL portion is already in place, actually, as mentioned by Sendoshin, above.

As to FTP access to the files, for various reasons (most of them legal) we cannot provide this service in any official capacity. As always, our members are free to do as they wish, so you might be able to find someone in our community who will be willing to provide such access. It will, however, never be officially supported.

These posts have been moved into their own topic, both to facilitate more conversation on the subject, and because the topic of the conversation had actually changed.

From the lack of feedback, it looks like categories aren't particularly important at this point.  Is there anything else people would like to see added to the Release Index?
